The Changing Styles of Wedding Gowns
Did you know that wedding gowns have not always been white?
In fact, it was only in 1840 when Queen Victoria wore a white gown to marry Albert of Saxe-Coburg that this tradition began. Although slow to catch on at first (after all not many people in the 1800’s could afford a dress they would only wear once), it soon became every little girls dream to be married in white.
Until recently that is.
Over the last 10 years wedding gowns have become as varied as the brides who wear them. From over-the-top traditional made from miles and miles of silk to sexy, cleavage bearing dresses that rival Oscar night fashions. There really is no such thing anymore as one style that everyone dreams of.
One of the biggest reasons for this change is the variety in how couples are choosing to celebrate their wedding day. It’s no longer a given that the ceremony will take place in a church. Couples can choose to be married at their favorite park, on the deck of a cruise ship, on a tropical beach or in a swanky Las Vegas chapel.
Part of creating your perfect day is choosing a wedding gown that displays your personality. Before heading out to spend hours hunting through racks of gowns, take the time to think about what style will best suit you.
Here are five tips to get you started:
- Do you want to be sexy? If so, how will your grandmother feel about
cleavage on your wedding day?
- Do you want to be classic? Remember, you’ll be looking at your photos for
50 years.
- Is white the most flattering color for you? Many women find ivory suits
their skin tone better. Or maybe you would like to try a softly colored dress,
which is fast becoming a popular choice.
- What is your best feature and how can you maximize it? If you have
beautifully toned arms and shoulders then strapless is the way to go.
Flaunting your best feature is sure to make you look stunning.
- Are there parts of your body that you would like to hide? Few women are perfect (and don’t we hate the ones who are) so think about ways to hide your least flattering features.
Whatever style of wedding gown appeals to you, you have more choices than any of the generations before you have had. You may surprise yourself and choose one that is completely different than you imagined as a little girl playing dress up!
