Choosing the Perfect Wedding Reception Music 

The style of wedding reception music you choose will set the tone for the entire event. A DJ can be a fun option for more casual receptions, whereas a live band has the potential to be more sophisticated.

If you opt for a DJ be sure to find one that plays the type of music you – and your guests – enjoy. If you don’t like a certain genre of music be sure to tell the DJ this upfront and find out what music he has access to. A good idea is to create a list of your favorite songs and request that the DJ play all of them over the course of the reception.

Another option for wedding reception music is live entertainment. Although not usually as flexible in terms of the range of music that can be played, a band gives a more upscale feel to the day. To avoid being disappointed be sure to listen to them play prior to finalizing the arrangements.

Whichever choice you feel would work best for your special day, it’s important that you give direction on exactly what you want. A couple of areas you will want to discuss with your DJ or band:

  1. The type of music you want played at different points throughout the reception. For example you may want jazz during the cocktail hour, classical for dinner and upbeat songs for dancing.
     
  2. The specific songs you want for the first dances. Make sure that whatever music option you choose, your desires can be accommodated. For the first dance between the bride and groom and dances with the parents you may already have songs selected. Be sure these are possible or work with your DJ or band to choose alternatives.

One of the best ways to find the perfect option for wedding reception music is to ask for referrals from family and friends. Even better, think of events you’ve been to recently where you enjoyed the music. Contact the hosts for a referral to the DJ or band that they used.
